Project Description The ORCA (On the Road with Children's Activities) Bus is a collaborative community project delivering a variety of FREE early childhood programs to all areas of our community. The mobile venue hosts early learning programs throughout the qathet Regional District for families with children ages 0-6 years old.The bus makes stops in Lund, Saltery Bay, Texada Island, Tla'amin, and Powell River. The ORCA Bus is a partnership of Powell River & District United Way and School District #47, designed to host a variety of programs and organizations on board such as StrongStart, inclusionPR,PRCYFSS, Lift, VCH,the City of Powell River Parks, Recreation and Culture Dept., the Tla'amin Child Development Resource Centre, etc. The project also includes many supporters, sponsors, donors and volunteers to help keep the wheels turning.
Job Summary The ORCA Bus Support Worker (OBSW) is an employee of Powell River and District United Way (PRDUW), reporting directly to PRDUW and supported by project partners at the ORCA Working Group (OWG). The OBSW works directly with the ORCA Bus Coordinator (OBC) to ensure that all goals and objectives of the program are met. The OBSW is responsible for a range of tasks to maintain the ORCA Bus, including but not limited to driving the bus, deep cleaning to meet COVID-19 protocols, and keeping track of bus maintenance needs. The OBSW also provides family navigation service to families on board (engaging in conversation to direct and refer families to local services offered on board and/or in the community when appropriate and as directed).
Responsibilities OBSW, with the OBC, will ensure that the appropriate number of direct service hours are provided via the ORCA Bus as per our funding contract. This may include: attendance at community events and interacting directly with families alongside ORCA programs on board for the purpose of community navigation and networking.
Complete training including bus driving and testing with the lead volunteer driver, privacy training, vulnerable sector criminal record check and read handbook for child abuse.
Physical Bus Requirements - Drive the ORCA Bus 4-5 shifts per week (training will be provided; Class 5 License; with a clean driving abstract) -- Execute all COVID-19 cleaning and safety protocols - Work with OBC to keep track of maintenance needs of the bus including insurance, fuel, oil, coolant, servicing, maintenance, review driver’s pre-inspection log books address any issues, etc. - Become knowledgeable of geographical areas and bus locations - Work with OBC to order consumable supplies - Work with OBC to ensure appropriate signage is posted on board regarding policies - Keep track of inspection needs and records related to bus - Perform safety inspections as required
Qualifications - Clear criminal record - Clear driving abstract - Experience working with families and young children - Prefer experience driving an RV or large vehicle - Must be able to lift bins and equipment on and off the bus
Administrative Requirements - Submit bus maintenance details to the OBC for the monthly reports to United Way and OWG - Ongoing communication with OBC - Familiarity with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive
Must be available for 4-5 daytime driving shifts per week, with additional deep cleaning, for a total of 20 hours per week. Some flexibility in scheduling is possible. Most shifts will take place weekdays, between 8am - 4pm. Some weekend availability may be required. As per our COVID-19 safety protocols, you will be required to wear a mask while on the bus.
NOTES: Funding ends on March 31, 2021 with the possibility of extension based upon program needs There will be a 2 week unpaid holiday Dec. 21, 2020 - Jan. 1, 2021.
